UroLift® Q&A

What is UroLift?

UroLift is a minimally invasive treatment option for an enlarged prostate, a condition also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which becomes more common as men age.

The focus of UroLift is to lift the enlarged prostate tissue out of the way to make it easier to urinate. This treatment option may be an ideal alternative to invasive surgery when medications aren’t enough to treat BPH.

When should I consider treatment with UroLift?

You may consider UroLift for the treatment of an enlarged prostate when your symptoms begin to interfere with your quality of life.

Symptoms of an enlarged prostate include:

  • Urine leaks
  • Bloody urine
  • Weak urine stream
  • Sudden urge to urinate
  • Increased urination frequency
  • Inability to empty the bladder
  • Difficulties starting a urine stream

In many cases, your Comprehensive Urology provider may initially recommend other treatments, including medications, to relieve symptoms of an enlarged prostate. You should also make necessary lifestyle changes, such as reducing your caffeine and alcohol consumption.

If conservative approaches aren’t enough to ease your symptoms, you may be a candidate for UroLift.

What happens during a UroLift procedure?

During the UroLift procedure, your provider inserts a delivery device through your urethra. They follow that with a small needle that places the implants in the prostate and lifts enlarged prostate tissue out of the way. Then, they remove the delivery device.

This treatment generally takes less than an hour and is an outpatient procedure. Your provider can provide medication to keep you comfortable during the treatment, and you can expect to go home to recover afterward.

Downtime after the UroLift implant procedure is minimal. Within two weeks of treatment, you should notice a significant difference in your symptoms.

The UroLift system doesn’t interfere with your sexual health, including your erections and ejaculation. If you need additional treatment later, your provider can remove the implants and complete the other procedure without any additional complications.
